1. Barometric (air) pressure drops

When barometric pressure falls, common just before or during monsoon, tissues around the joint, especially affected by osteoarthritis or old injuries, can expand slightly. In a joint where the space is already reduced cartilages are damaged, this tiny expansion can press on surrounding tissue and nerves and can cause pain.

2. Synovial fluid thickens slightly

Synovial fluid is a liquid that lubricates your joint. It’s like engine oil that thickens slightly in cold temperatures. Because of this, movement doesn’t feel smooth. The ease of movement is lost. This may feel like stiffness or a ‘creaky’ joint. 

3. Humidity affects nerve sensitivity. 

High humidity has been directly linked to increased pain sensitivity in people with existing nerve involvement. Cold weather reduces blood flow through the small vessels feeding nerves, slowing nerve conduction and worsening numbness/tingling in already-damaged nerves. 

4. Muscles and other soft tissues contract

Lower temperatures make muscles, tendons, and ligaments tighten and lose some elasticity. Tighter tissue around a joint means reduced range of motion and more strain on the joint itself, which is why stiffness is often worse first thing in the morning during monsoon/winter.
